I don’t talk to much about my present personal life on here, but allow me to start out by saying this past month has been the month from hell (no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t pull off a post in May).
I was a punker that also loved ska (still do), so when the Hellcat Records “Give ‘em the Boot” comp came out I was in heaven. We didn’t have a record store in our town apart from WalMart, so anything one of our group got hold of was instantly reproduced on cassette. Once someone had “imported” a copy of Macimumrocknroll, we ordered random comps from the back pages and they were the backbone of our “scene”. You would brag about being into some band, even though you had only ever heard the one song.
"You would brag about being into some band, even though you had only ever heard the one song." HAH, this speaks to me. There were absolutely more than a handful of bands I considered myself a fan of even though I knew nothing of theirs beyond like 2 songs I heard on random comps. Also, that's a great pick! I used to have "Give 'Em The Boot II" but I lost it sometime during the last decade...
I'm old so comp sampler CDs were very important to finding out about other bands. You are a young person in the late 90s and you had 20 dollars, are you going to spend it on a $16 CD or a $3.99 sampler? Not really a hard choice. So any label sampler were my favorites back then, especially if it was a multi-label sampler.
However, my favorite actual comp comps are: Anti-Matter (Another Planet Records, 1996) and I Can't Believe It's Not Water (Just Add Water, 1996) and Punk Sucks (Liberation Records).
Absolutely miss compilation cds and wish theyd press more in vinyls today. The epitaph demo era with live/music videos rule, with the warped tour compa being my fav!
Punk-O-Rama!

I still like finding compilation CDs! I've scored a couple of good 80s compilations recently.
Ooh ooh, I love a good 80s comp!
Just the mention of Jock Jams takes me back to playing some outside basketball with the boys.
I never played basketball outside with anyone, but listening to Jock Jams made me feel like I could haha

Oh, absolutely! I honestly have a hard time discovering new bands these days now that I can’t just pick up a random sampler.
Cane here to say Punk Sucks, that comp changed my life in a tiny CO town

Oooh, I’ve never had a comp on vinyl—that would be amazing. And I def agree on Epitaph!
I remember having an epitaph live dbd with from first to last, motion city soundtrack and matchbook romance. That was the best!
I still have a bunch of CDs.
This one is a good compilation: https://www.popmatters.com/songs-underground-nyc-subway-review
Thanks for sharing - I love the concept of this compilation!
Betty rocket OMG I remember them!
Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if you gave me that CD!
Oh geez MAYBE
